Choose Life

Choose Life is Scotland's national strategy and action plan to prevent Suicide:
Suicide is an act of self harm that results in death. Suicide is everyone's business and affects individuals, friends, families, loved ones, co-workers and whole communities.

suicide
- one of the National Programme's key aims. Choose Life sets out a framework to ensure that action is taken nationally and locally to build skills, develop training, encourage people to seek help early, improve knowledge and awareness of 'what works' to prevent suicide, and to encourage partnership working and improved co-ordination between services.

A target has been set of reducing Scotland's suicide rate by 20% by 2013.

Working nationally and locally

As well as work at the national level, there are Local Action Plans for suicide prevention and a Choose Life co-ordinator in each of Scotland's thirty-two local authority areas. Local Plans are developed as part of the Community Planning Partnership process. This helps ensure that people and communities are genuinely engaged with the ongoing work to prevent suicide.

The aim of the Local Plans is to improve the capacity of communities to educate and raise awareness of suicide and to carry out prevention and intervention actions. Just as importantly, Local Plans also aim to help communities provide practical support for those bereaved by suicide.

Choose Life supports a huge array of projects and activities in areas across Scotland. To find out what's happening near you, visit Choose Life's Local Action Plan pages.
