Fraser - a poem

This poem was written by Fraser, who became involved in the Theatre Nemo drama project whilst at Polmont Young Offenders Institution, and was featured in the performance his group made there.

What is your idea of prison?

From where do you get your views?

That which is portrayed in the media, the ‘Holiday Camp News’?

‘Mod Cons’ For Modern Cons! To further their leisure, a PC

A Play Station, a la carte menu created to enhance pleasure,

A state of the art gym for them to work out on

So that when they’re released, they’re a cannier super-con

Or perhaps you’ve been naughty? A little bit wayward?

And have ended up in the tough prison,

Of the irreversible recidivist: the thug, the thief, the murderer, the perverse beast

Surely! They’ll dine on you and your fear, before your release?

Then there is terror.

Terror when your cell door opens and the gauntlet of terror you’ll run daily,

Before the terror of your door closes: and there is no safety

In the guardian warders,

Their terror is so much more brutal. It’s official

Prison is all of that?

And a lot more?

Here are some ‘facts’, from me, for you to explore

Freedom has been taken from me,

The freedom of a lawless life,

For I have committed crimes,

That have caused endless strife.

I am being punished,

So are my parents, sisters and brother

My family’s love is distorted.

I now bitterly regret not heeding my mother.

My victims also have been affected: how?

I don’t quite know,

A loss on their person,

This at least my conscience tells me so.

I dwell upon these things, and I punish my mind,

That is a part, of how I spend my time.

I also use what is available for me to pursue

The ‘luxuries’ from the media’s sensationalist point of view.

There are also education classes

To take from them what I will,

A chance to broaden my horizons

Or to barter for a pill?

As for all the terrors, yes they are there

They’re there for all of us, no matter where

Loneliness, disenchantment, regret, anger and fear and longing and doubt

Surround us daily,

Those of us out there and in here

Prison is what you and I make

Free yourself with love

Compassion

And understanding
