Scotland's Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA)

What’s it for?

A training course that improves mental health literacy and helps people to recognise the signs and symptoms of someone with mental health problems; to respond to various mental health crises, engage with, support and signpost people to appropriate professional help.

Who’s it for?

The Scottish public, employers, managers, especially frontline staff in local authorities, NHS staff, Scottish Prison staff and Jobcentre Plus staff.

How much does it cost?

Varies fromfree up to £150 per person per course, depending on who delivers it and where.

Length

Four x 3-hour sessions that can be run over two or four weeks, or two days consecutively.

Scotland's Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA)

SMHFA both saves lives and improves lives. The training course is based on work pioneered in Australia and, after an encouraging Scottish pilot in 2004, the course has been adapted for Scotland and it is now being rolled out across the country.

Scotland's Mental Health First Aid and the National Programme

The SMHFA training programme has a central role in meeting all of the National Programme's Key Aims . The National Programme provides funding for this work and works in partnership with NHS Health Scotland to ensure Mental Health First Aid training is available for general public, frontline public services staff, voluntary and community groups and workplaces.
